Insect Monitoring

Documenting insect abundance across time and space is an essential step to assess the effects of anthropogenic threats on insect populations. We are monitoring the insect community that inhabits Smith College. Our activities vary seasonally, in the fall we take leaf litter samples, in the spring we use Malaise traps to catch flying insects and emergence traps to collect insects that overwintered in our gardens. In the summer of 2022, we will expand our monitoring efforts to include the MacLeish Field Station.
